First things first babe: It is normal to have a vaginal odor. Knowing your normal odor is an important tool for identifying abnormal odors. Sometimes, women may develop an unusual odor even though they are taking good care of their bodies. It is also normal to have unusual odors here and there. However, having a persistent, strong, or pungent odor is not normal. Read on to learn about vaginal odor remedies.
How to get rid of my vaginal odor naturally
Practice good hygiene – Trying to mask or get rid of your normal vaginal odor can be detrimental to your vaginal health. Indeed, taking steps to neutralize all bacteria with douching or using scented products can irritate your vagina and cause infections.
The best way you can keep your vaginal odor in check is to maintain healthy hygiene habits. Using a washcloth and mild soap will clean away dead skin cells, oils, and sweat. Perfumed soaps, especially those marketed as vaginal odor remedies, can throw off your vaginal pH. Some women also soak in a bath with apple cider vinegar to naturally reduce vaginal bacteria.
Wear cotton underwear – 100% cotton is a breathable fabric that can wick sweat and vaginal fluids away from the body. Save your satin or silk panties for special occasions.
Diet – Eating a well-balanced, healthful diet can support vaginal health.
Eliminate stress – Stress causes a cascade of symptoms in our bodies and our vaginas are not exempted. High stress can disrupt your vaginal pH and also stimulates sweat glands around your vulva.
How to get rid of vaginal odor not-so-naturally
External deodorants – If you want your vagina to smell like flowers, use deodorants and perfumes on the outside of your vagina. Chemical products can disrupt your flora and natural vaginal chemistry so do not insert them. Women have sweat glands in the crevice between their thighs and vulva so some women use deodorant in that crevice to reduce body odor.
Essential oils – Some women find that essential oils improve their scent. Although there is little medical research surrounding essential oils, tea tree oil may have antimicrobial properties that may keep bacteria in check. Tea tree oil can be irritating on the skin, especially around the vagina. If a product has tea tree oil in it, make sure to only use it on your vaginal area if it is approved for genital use.
Supplements – There are some over-the-counter products that aim to restore balance in your vaginal pH and bacterial flora. Sometimes, these products can make a positive difference, whereas other times they may worsen your odor.
How to cure vaginal odor
Remember, our goal is to cure unusual vaginal odors and support a healthy vagina. If your vaginal odor is abnormal, it is best to see your gynecologist who may prescribe a medication that eliminates the underlying cause. And, if the abnormal odor is accompanied by itching, burning, pain, or changes in your discharge, skip the home remedies and see your doctor. Many unpleasant odors are due to an overgrowth of certain types of bacteria or yeast that need to be cured with antibiotics or antifungals.
