Apple Cider Vinegar Hot Flashes: Helpful or Not So Much?

Hot flashes are one of the most frustrating menopause symptoms for women. This common symptom can derail your concentration, interrupt you at work, and wake you at night. It can even make you stand out in a crowd if you are casually wearing short sleeves in a snowstorm.

There are so many natural menopause remedies that promise to help alleviate hot flashes. But there is little evidence that menopause remedies work aside from hormone replacement therapy. One reason why it is hard to treat hot flashes is we do not know the exact cause of hot flashes. Certainly, we know that hot flashes are the result of declining estrogen and progesterone levels associated with perimenopause and menopause, but the physiological mechanism between hot flashes and vasomotor flushing remains a mystery.

If you are struggling with hot flashes, there are numerous natural and hormonal options available to you. However, many women become overwhelmed when trying to decide which menopause supplements to try. There have also been some small studies that have suggested that people with Type 2 diabetes may have lower blood sugar levels when they take apple cider vinegar before bedtime. The theory is that apple cider vinegar can improve the function of insulin in your body. (It is important to note that people with Type 2 diabetes must take their medication as prescribed and apple cider vinegar in no way replaces medical treatment of this disease.)

Other possible benefits of apple cider vinegar include:

  • Warding off heart disease by lowering blood pressure, cholesterol, and triglycerides

Some women claim that taking apple cider vinegar daily has helped to reduce their hot flashes. Apple cider vinegar may help decrease the frequency and severity of hot flashes because its antioxidants may draw toxins out of the body. In addition, apple cider vinegar has alkaline properties that may help balance your hormones. Furthermore, some theories suggest that apple cider vinegar may help your body produce hormones, including estrogen, which may, in turn, offer menopause symptom relief.

Apple cider vinegar may help with other menopause symptoms and even conditions associated with postmenopause including:

  • Relieving constipation and stomach bloating with good gut bacteria
  • Curbing your sweet tooth
  • Aiding in weight loss
  • Stabilizing your mood and warding off depression
  • Preventing osteoporosis (The magnesium in apple cider vinegar is important for bone health)
  • Reducing heart disease risk

The Final Word on Apple Cider Vinegar Hot Flashes Remedy

Apple cider vinegar appears to be safe as long as you do not take too much. And, there is quite a bit of anecdotal evidence that suggests apple cider vinegar may have many health benefits. Therefore, if you are struggling with hot flashes and other menopause symptoms, why not try apple cider vinegar? Just remember, although apple cider vinegar has claimed the spotlight for now as a powerful natural health remedy, there is little evidence and research in human studies to back its use as an alternative therapy.
